Apostate Verity — Beginner's Guide
Apostate Verity is a 2D Souls-like where you play a battle nun, Verity, wielding a long cross-bladed pole-axe. It's hard on purpose. This guide gets you through your first run of the free web demo (build v0.1.00) without the frustration.
Heads up: the web demo is an early, short, English-only build. It's enough to learn the combat feel; the Windows demo is more current. Both are free and official from KitDa Games.
How to start
- Open the Play Online page and let the build load (it's a sizeable Unity WebGL game — give it a minute).
- On the title screen, choose New Game (confirm with Enter or a click).
- You begin at a bonfire-style checkpoint in a dark, rocky forest. A short tutorial banner shows your core controls.
The controls you need first
- Move: A / D (full WASD bound)
- Jump: K
- Dodge / roll: L — your single most important survival tool
- Attack: J (next to jump and dodge)
A gamepad works too. See the full controls page for details and remapping.
How to actually survive (Souls-like fundamentals)
- Patience beats aggression. Watch an enemy do its full attack before you commit. Souls-likes punish greed.
- Dodge through attacks, don't run from them. A well-timed roll (L) slips past the hit and lets you punish during recovery.
- Your pole-axe is slow but reaches far. Use the range: poke from just outside the enemy's swing, then back off.
- One or two hits, then reset. Don't get greedy with long combos — recovery frames get you killed.
- The bonfire is your anchor. It's a safe reset point. Expect to die and learn; that's the genre, not a mistake on your part.
- Read the arena. Note ledges and gaps — falling and environmental hits hurt as much as enemies.
First-run checklist
- ✅ Play on a desktop browser (mobile can't handle the controls — and there's no real mobile/APK version).
- ✅ Use a controller if you have one — the dodge-attack rhythm feels better on a pad.
- ✅ Turn the volume up; audio cues telegraph attacks.
- ✅ Accept that early deaths are how you learn enemy patterns.
